Boston Analytical was co-founded in 1987 by two college roommates; Bob McBride and Gary Feinstein who noticed there was a need in the pharmaceutical industry for a contract laboratory that was focused on expertise, on-time performance, service, and quality. The laboratory was originally in North Reading, MA but quickly needed more space, leading them to Salem, NH, where they grew their business organically for over 20 years. They quickly earned the respect of a loyal group of clients that were made up of repackaging companies, large and small pharmaceutical companies, and CDMO’s that valued their responsiveness, expertise, and commitment to service and quality.
When the Carlin family, owners of Alpha Analytical- one of the largest environmental laboratories in the United States, wanted to enter the life sciences industry, Boston Analytical was a natural acquisition choice. Both companies were family owned and laser focused on customer service and quality. The Carlins acquired Boston Analytical in 2009 and brought their extensive resources and robust laboratory operations experience to the BA team. With the addition of significant capital investments, talented industry leaders, and digital enterprise systems such as LabWare™ LIMS, Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (LabWare ELN™), BASIS (Customer online data portal) and ETQ Reliance (QMS), Boston Analytical thrived and grew organically over the next several years and soon, once again needed more space. BA built a new 30,000 sq ft state of the art, purpose-built cGMP laboratory facility in January 2017. In 2019, they acquired the building adjacent to it and turned it into an additional 30,000 sq ft of brand-new state of art laboratory and working space. The facility was completed in 2023 and boasts brand new microbiology, analytical development, and advanced therapeutics laboratories. In 2022 BA opened an additional microbiology laboratory to support cleanroom and critical utilities sampling and testing needs in Morrisville, NC. In March of 2023, Alpha Analytical was sold, allowing sole focus by the ownership group on BA moving forward.
In March of 2024, Boston Analytical was renamed and rebranded as BA Sciences. This name is more representative of the broad range of drug forms and modalities that the organization works with and the overall breadth of services and experience that the company offers. Boston Analytical is now doing business as BA Sciences and is a global leader in analytical testing techniques for the Advanced Therapeutics space while staying true to its core competencies.
